Weeks later, New Zealand’s Defense Minister, Andrew Little, arrived in Fiji and signed a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with the Fijian Minister of Home Affairs and Immigration. By Katie Bernard, Kacen BaylessKansas City Star TOPEKA, Kan. – At his lowest point, Mike Lewis was well aware that it would be cheaper to spend 97 cents on a bullet than it would be to spend $150 an hour on therapy for his PTSD. The Butler County paramedic has been haunted since October 2013, when he was on a reserve EMS team responding to a call from his father the night his mother died. Lewis was still in training and promised his mother at the time that he would be the best paramedic he could be. But what followed…
by Jakkar AimeryDetroit News DETROIT – The Michigan State Police is revamping its approach to trooper training as the agency looks to diversify its recruitment statewide. Officials say they have hired more recruiters and expanded the agency’s “Teen-to-Trooper” pipeline, a program to attract young candidates to police work. They are also stepping up efforts to attract diverse candidates, setting a goal to increase the agency’s minority trooper applicant pool to 25% and female trooper applicant pool to 20%, saying diversity is “critically important to strengthening community relations and building trust,” officials said. The state police’s most recent graduating class, which…
Bad weather cut off a vehicle checkpoint in Athens by several hours, but it was still long enough for police to make four arrests and issue 18 citations and warnings. Twenty-nine officers from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department (ACCPD) and surrounding jurisdictions participated in the checkpoint on Friday, July 21. They held it on the exit ramp from the GA-10 Inner Loop to Oconee Street. They started at 8:06 p.m. and planned to stay until midnight, but bad weather forced the ACCPD to end the operation just 35 minutes into it. Still, during that time, officers checked 158 vehicles for…

By Adam Ferriscleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Bedford Heights police officer sued the city last week, saying he should be paid overtime as the department’s K-9 handler. Officer Ryan Kaetzel filed the suit in federal court in Cleveland. He has been an officer since 2011 and a K-9 handler since 2018. Kaetzel takes care of the dog on and off duty, including feeding, walking, grooming and training, along with other tasks such as taking it to vet appointments, according to the lawsuit. The city required Kaetzel to ensure the dog was in good health, but it never paid him for…
Nassau County police call it a mobile film set where trainees can respond to simulated crises they may be called to respond to, whether it’s at the bank in Bethpage, a house of worship in Hicksville or a split-level home in Syosset. Their planned $11.7 million “police training village” at the department’s 89,000-square-foot academy and $54 million intelligence center, opening in 2021 at Nassau Community College in Uniondale, can be repurposed into restaurants, bars, school buildings and more to train officers for critical situations. The additional investment puts Nassau among a growing number of police forces that have opened training…
By Queenie WongLos Angeles Times SACRAMENTO, Calif. — After a man was shot and killed outside a Paramount bank in 2019, Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives turned to Google for help identifying suspects. Through a search warrant, detectives directed the tech giant to provide cellphone location data to people who were near places the man visited on the day he was killed. The data Google provided eventually led detectives to two suspects, who are now in jail for the murder. But law enforcement’s demands for Google’s location data using what are known as “geofence warrants” also raised concerns that the…
Associated Press PHOENIX — A federal judge has ruled that an Arizona law limiting how close people can get to recording law enforcement is unconstitutional, citing a violation of a clearly established right to film police doing their jobs. The ruling Friday by U.S. District Judge John J. Tuchi permanently blocks enforcement of the law, which he suspended last year. The law was signed by former Republican Gov. Doug Ducey in July 2022, but enthusiasm for the restrictions waned and lawmakers denied an opportunity to defend the law during an initial court stay. Republican state Sen. John Kavanagh, who sponsored…
